The GMES Sentinel-1 Earth Radar Observatory, aprojects co-funded by the European Union and theEuropean Space Agency (ESA), is a constellation of Cbandradar satellites. The satellites have been conceivedto be a continuous and reliable source of C-band SARimagery for operational application such as mapping ofglobal landmasses, coastal zones and monitoring ofshipping routes. ESA is responsible for the developmentof the Sentinel-1 satellites that are built by an industrialconsortium headed by Thales Alenia Space Italy (TASI)as Prime Contractor.TAS-I is also directly responsible for the production ofthe Spacecraft Bus and the Avionic S/S including theAvionic SW (ASW), which is characterized by:1 The high performances of its attitude and orbitdetermination and control function;2 Scheduling of the imaging activity on positionbasiswith high geo-location performances;3 High on board autonomy both in routine andcontingency situations.This paper is focused on the Sentinel-1 Avionic SW,which has currently been qualified by TAS-I for Flight.It covers both the SW architecture and developmentprocess areas:1 Avionic SW context;2 Avionic SW architecture;3 Flexibility of PUS-based on-board autonomy andFDIR;4 Validation and Qualification activities.
