Advanced engine seals for low leakage and long life

Metal fiber based seal systems are used for gas path clearance control in gas turbine engines. Fiber metal seals have been used in compressor applications since 1965 and have logged millions of hours of operation. Fiber metal compressor rub strips are made from fine diameter Hastelloy x fibers produced as a randomly arrayed fiber mat which is sintered together. Fiber metal seals offer abradability, erosion resistance, leakage control and temperature resistance. These seals are typically fabricated by forming, brazing to a backing ring, and machining to finished size.
