The reflection of a thermal wave at an interface of two media is studied analytically and numerically. The reflectivity and transmissivity are derived by using theoretical procedures and are validated by the numerical solution of the thermal wave propagation. In this first part, the theoretical relationships are presented for the calculation of reflectivity. The one-dimensional thermal wave is discussed in detail. The theoretical and numerical study of the reflection process shows that the reflectivity can be negative, and the transmissivity can be greater than unity. Numerical analysis verified these possibilities.
