There is great need in industrial water treatment for an easy-to-apply liquid which generates hypobromous acid upon addition to water. Several years ago we developed a stabilized form of bromine chloride which fulfilled many of these requirements. However, the product had certain characteristics which made it difficult to handle and store. We recently developed a second generation product - again based on bromine chloride as the active ingredient - which overcomes the difficulties of the prior technology. Our experience in the laboratory indicated that the new product was easy to apply, had desirable handling characteristics, and proved effective at inactivating microorganisms. This encouraged us to further investigate the application of the material as a biocide for industrial water treatment.
