Traffic vessels frequently need to berth at the berthing members ofoffshore wind turbines (OWTs), which results in excessive nacelleacceleration, shutting down of wind turbines, and potential damage tothe OWT. In this study, the finite element software ABAQUS was usedto simulate several different berthing scenarios. Through the analysisof stress and tower top acceleration, it is found that even if thesupporting structure can withstand a collision, the excessiveaccelerations at the nacelle reach the safety threshold value of thenacelle, which will lead to shut down and even equipment damage. Byfitting the relation formula of energy–acceleration correlation curve, acollision energy of a traffic vessel can be obtained to ensure theacceleration of the nacelle not exceeding threshold value of a specifiedwind turbine. The results of this study provide a valuable reference forthe scenarios of traffic vessels berthing at the OWTs.
