This paper presents a novel two-step hydrodynamic coefficientsidentification method to identify the damping and restoring momentcoefficients of ship roll motion in irregular waves. The randomdecrement technique (RDT) is first used to convert the responses intorandom decrement signatures. Then, a Hilbert transform (HT)-basednonlinear system identification method is used to identify the dampingand restoring moment coefficients from the obtained random decrementsignatures. Numerical studies were performed on two ship models withsimulated data. The results show that the proposed method cansuccessfully identify the hydrodynamic coefficients of roll motionusing the vibration responses of ships in irregular waves.
