Legendre polynomials are chosen as simpler alternative mode functionsto represent the elastic deflection to prove that a superposition of any orthogonalmathematical functions can represent the flexural deflection ofa slender ship in waves, despite a fact that those functions generally donot satisfy the required boundary conditions. The validity of obtained resultsis confirmed through a comparison of the results between the conventionalfree-free beam natural modes and the Legendre polynomialsused as the mode functions in the case of Euler-Bernoulli’s beam. Fromthis comparison, the rationality of consistency in the proposed methodis proven and availability in a wide range of engineering fields can beexpected.
