A technique is formulated to assist engineers who are involved insubmarine cable projects. A mathematical model is built to calculate thefailure rate for every 250 m length interval of the cable route. Inturn, critical parts of the cable route are identified and suitableprotective measures are determined to improve the reliability ofoperation to a given safe limit. Correlation between the externalprotections and the sea bed condition is considered, and as a result anew parameter, equivalent protection, is defined. Calculation is basedon the concept of dimensional reduction. A computer evaluation ofseveral case studies is illustrated for better understanding and forcomparison with the practical situation
