The authors examine the design and implementation of a knowledgebased system. They investigate certain aspects of the knowledgerepresentation problem, concentrating particularly on the use ofqualitative modeling in representing deep knowledge. A novel qualitativemodeling framework that draws upon established ideas, as well as some ofthe basic concepts of control theory, is presented. Some of thecapabilities of the method were explored by applying it within asupervisory system for a simulated distillation column. Details of theapplication and the results of demonstration runs are presented
