The authors describe a systematic investigation into the variousfault modes of a voltage-fed pulse-width-modulated (PWM) inverter systemfor induction motor drives. All the fault modes were identified, and apreliminary mathematical analysis was made for the key faulttypes-namely, input supply single line to ground fault, rectifier diodeshort circuit, inverter transistor base drive open, and invertertransistor short circuit conditions. The predicted fault performanceswere substantiated by a simulation study. The study was used todetermine stresses in power circuit components and to evaluatesatisfactory postfault steady-state operating regions. The results areequally useful for better protection system design and easy faultdiagnosis
