The service control concepts for intelligent networks arediscussed, focusing on service action, service control, and functionalarchitecture. A method of abstracting network configurations andswitching system architectures to realize a wide variety of servicedefinitions is described. The method involves the conceptualrequirements for the modeling of networks and switching systems, anetwork model which is necessary and sufficient for services obtained byabstracting real network configurations, and a functional model forcontrolling switching systems in terms of the proposed abstract networkmodel
