Supporting collaborative, problem-based learning throughinformation system technology

This paper describes a suite of flexible software tools(CoMMIT-Collaborative Multi-Media Instructional Toolkit) that providescomputer support for a variety of educational models includingcooperative, distance, and problem-based learning. Students using CoMMIThave worked both synchronously and asynchronously in a variety ofdomains. The CoMMIT system provides a comprehensive, collaborativelearning environment that includes integrated modules for authoring,student learning and student evaluation. This paper briefly introduceseach of the three CoMMIT modules and focuses on the WWW-based studentmodule using a problem-based learning (PBL) case to illustrate itsfunctionality. The CoMMIT student module was recently used and evaluatedagainst a paper-based PBL case that required students to collaborate onthe design of an information system.
