The planning and implementation of a Manufacturing Design threadin the Manufacturing Engineering curriculum at Miami University isdescribed. Courses in Engineering Materials, Manufacturing Processes,and Advanced Manufacturing Processes are linked through both designprojects and student skills. This thread gives students an in-depthstudy of materials and processes in the context of manufacturing anddesign. As students progress through these courses, they build theirunderstanding of both quality and product/process design iteration, andtheir capabilities in both the level of project sophistication andprocess complexity. This work is part of a multi-year plan to integratedesign throughout the engineering curriculum. Integrated design in acourse thread will satisfy, in part, ABET design requirements. Thelinkage is embodied in a Project Development Cycle. Materials andManufacturing Processes courses are linked by design projects involvingmaterial and process selection for a multicomponent product. To buildstudent familiarity with design concurrency, student teams from eachcourse meet to share material and process recommendations. Studentsmanufacture product components in the Manufacturing Processes course.Subsequently, they plan and implement their automated assembly inAdvanced Manufacturing Processes. Results and reflections from theseinitial implementations are described along with plans for future courseofferings
