Last year the National Science Foundation sponsored a new programentitled “NSF Engineering Scholars Workshop: Preparing EngineeringFaculty of the Future” which was hosted by Carnegie MellonUniversity, USA, July 21-26, 1996. The primary objective of the workshopwas to provide new engineering educators with a variety of skills tosucceed in both education and research. Focusing on an approach for theintegration of research and education, this paper discusses one area inwhich the workshop influenced the author's experiences as a new facultymember
