Because students bring their own set of experiences, values, andinquisitiveness into the classroom, a project was developed at thejunior mechanical engineering laboratory at Western New England Collegeto let the student apply expertise based upon the completion of onestrength of materials course, one course in materials science,experiences in written communications as an individual and as aparticipant in developing a team report, one introductory probabilityand statistics course, and common-sense-based knowledge and precollegeexperience. The project requires the students to answer the question`How strong is a 5/16-18UNC-2A×3 carriage bolt?' An ASTM tensiletest is performed on a standard 1018 test bar to collect yield strength,elastic modulus, ultimate strength, percent elongation, percentreduction of area, modulus of toughness, modulus of resilience, rupturestrength, and Poisson ratio data. The students' measurements are thenanalyzed with respect to these data
