Because students bring their own set of experiences, values, and inquisitiveness into the classroom, a project was developed at the junior mechanical engineering laboratory at Western New England College to let the student apply expertise based upon the completion of one strength of materials course, one course in materials science, experiences in written communications as an individual and as a participant in developing a team report, one introductory probability and statistics course, and common-sense-based knowledge and precollege experience. The project requires the students to answer the question 'How strong is a 5/16-18UNC-2A*3 carriage bolt?' An ASTM tensile test is performed on a standard 1018 test bar to collect yield strength, elastic modulus, ultimate strength, percent elongation, percent reduction of area, modulus of toughness, modulus of resilience, rupture strength, and Poisson ratio data. The students' measurements are then analyzed with respect to these data.
