Auditory organs exhibit amplificatory phenomena whose origin isunclear. Normal human hearing, for example, requires the production ofenergy by some element within the cochlea. The authors show thatindividual hair bundles produce transient active movements. Theycharacterize these motions and suggest that they may underlieauditory-organ amplificatory phenomena such as the cochlear amplifierand otoacoustical emissions
