Integrated optical switches on InP for network configuration anddistribution

We report the design, fabrication, and performance of various2×2 and 4×4 optical switches. We present the monolithicintegration of laser diodes and switches, and on-chip optical modetransformers for effective fiber to chip coupling. Polarizationindependent switching with a current of 9 mA is demonstrated. An outputpower of 0.5 mW from a chip containing a laser diode and a switch hasbeen achieved. The coupling loss of a butt coupled single mode fiber toan InP waveguide via an integrated mode transformer is as low as 1.5 dB
