2.8-Gbit/s, 3-channel optical transmitter and receiver moduleshave been developed for board-to-board interconnection in AsynchronousTransfer Mode (ATM) switching systems. These modules are constructedwith optical and electrical submodules. The optical submodule mainlyconsists of a multimode-fiber array and an optical device array. Theelectrical submodule is constructed by using multichip module technologywith GaAs ICs and multilayer ceramic substrates. These submodules areindependently assembled after they are tested. Over a wide range oftemperatures, error-free 250-m transmission is successfully demonstratedwithout automatic power-control and automatic temperature controlcircuits in the transmitter module
