It has been found that the electrical conduction characteristicsof polyethylene are influenced strongly by the vacuum treatment ofcross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and/or semiconductive electrodes. Themajor changes due to the vacuum treatment of these materials are thesuppression in the rate of change of current density at some field rangeand the change of conduction mechanisms from the SCLC at low fields tothe Schottky at high fields. These changes were attributed to the lowmolecular weight byproducts, which may modify the charge accumulationcharacteristics
