The major part of the refractory wall has a number of heating rings arranged spaced one above the other. The heating rings are made of a metal which becomes electrically conducting upon heating, pref. stabilised ZrO2. After heating by means of a burner (e.g. to 1000 degrees C) an electric current is passed through the rings to heat the inside of the degassing vessel (to about 1700 degrees C for molten steel). The rings may be divided into segments. The stabilising substance may be 10% yttrium oxide.
