RTV (room-temperature vulcanizing) silicon rubber is investigatedwith various levels of alumina trihydrate (ATH) filler. The temperaturedistribution in the coating during dry band arcing is theoreticallydetermined. The effect of the addition of ATH filler is discussed. It isshown that dry band arcing produces high temperatures (hot spots) whichdissociate chemical bonds at the surface. It is suggested that duringdry band arcing, the heat energy at the surface penetrates into the bulkof the coating, thereby breaking side groups and the main chain of thepolydimethyl silicone molecule
