Understanding Continuous Wearable Technology Use Behavior for Fitness and Self-health Management Among Middle-Aged and Elderly People

With the increasingly aging population and smart wearable technology advances, fitness exercise and self-health management have become important research topics. Middle-aged and elderly people are considered to be at higher risk of contracting multiple chronic diseases, thus increasing the need for self-health management. Many people have started using wearable devices to monitor their physical activities and improve their health. However, although several studies have examined the factors affecting the adoption of wearable technology, the literature directly related to middle-aged and elderly people's continuous use behavior is scant. Thus, the purpose of this study was to combine the theory of planned behavior and flow theory to explain middle-aged and elderly people's continuous use behavior of wearable technology. A field survey was conducted in Taiwan to collect data from middle-aged and elderly people. A total of 150 valid responses were obtained, constituting a response rate of 75%. The results indicate that attitude, subjective norm, perceived enjoyment, and concentration have positive effects on continuous use behavior, whereas perceived control does not significantly affect it. The results also indicated that perceived enjoyment and concentration have positive effects on attitude. The study has implications for the development of strategies aimed at increasing wearable technology adoption.
