This paper reports on an examination of the effect of inductive Distributed Flexible AC Transmission System (D-FACTS) devices on the performance of mho ground distance elements. D-FACTS devices supply a distributed solution to avoid transmission bottlenecks, but their operation may contribute in adding more complexity for ground distance elements in cases with fault resistance in the fault path or induced mutual coupling between parallel lines. This work focuses on the influence of these devices on the fault resistance coverage of the ground distance elements. The study analyzes the response of ground distance function in presence of fault resistance for a ground fault and how the power flow direction affects this response. Also, this work explores how D-FACTS impact the mutual coupling degree between the parallel lines and how that may affect the performance of their protection system.
