Integrity of pipelines may be assessed by several methods including 5-M Methodology, inline inspection (ILI), hydrostatic testing, external corrosion direct assessment (ECDA) and stress-corrosion cracking direct assessment (SCCDA). To carry out ILI analysis proper launching and receiving of pigs should be available in the pipeline net-work. Hydrostatic testing requires additional care to avoid presence of water after the test - otherwise the pipeline will suffer from internal corrosion. ECDA or SCCDA is used when ILI and hydrostatic testing options are not feasible. Several data are required for perfonning ECDA or SCCDA analysis. The 5-M methodology combines various integrity assessment methods (ECDA, SCCDA, and ILI) with applied science so that strengths of one methodology overcome the weaknesses of others. The 5-M methodology consists of five steps: 1. Mitigation 2. Model 3. Monitoring 4. Maintenance 5. Management This paper elaborates on step 1 of the 5-M methodology and discusses how this step complements ECDA, SCCDA. and ILI methods.
