In recent years, there has been an exponential growth in the development of increasingly autonomous systems for a wide range of applications. While the requirements for each autonomous system are unique, all systems consist of four components: sensing, perception, decision making, and action execution and control. In this paper, we focus on the perception stage: the translation of sensor data into actionable understanding of the environment around the autonomous system. We derive the requirements for sensor fusion tools that can support autonomous systems, present recent advancements in making such tools available, and propose some future directions.
