Active magnetic bearings (AMBs) comprise one of the most important actuation options in modern rotor vibration control. Most AMBs use bias currents to ensure that a non-zero magnetic field is present at all times so that a finite rate of change of the bearing force can always be achieved. Traditional approaches to the control of AMBs set these bias currents to be constant. This paper explores an alternative that is consistent with achieving much lower-cost bearings. The control implications of this alternative are explored.
