The causticizing process that produces white liquor from green liquor consumes lime (CaO) and produces lime mud (CaCO_3) as a by-product. The function of the lime kiln is to convert CaCO_3 back into CaO for reuse in the causticizing process. The high temperature process that drives the CO_2 out of the CaCO_3 to produce CaO is called "calcining".
