Secondary Formation of Halogenated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Photochemical Reaction on Mineral Particle

In this study, photochemical reactions of pyrene adsorbed on to different mineral particles were investigated with respect to secondary formation chlorinated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Kaolinite, halloysite, montmorillonite and glass beads were selected as model particles. Pyrene adsorbed on to each mineral particle was irradiated with the simulated sunlight in the presence of sodium chloride solution and production amounts of 1-chloropyrene (Cl-Py) in samples were determined by a gas chromatograph equipped with a mass spectrometer (GC/MS). Secondary formation of Cl-Py was found in irradiated samples but the amounts were different depending used particle. The highest production of Cl-Py was determined when pyrene was irradiated on kaolinite particles (861 ng/g) and followed by glass beads (177 ng/g) and halloysite particles (83 ng/g). On the other hand, montmorillonite had only little contribution on formation of the Cl-Py. These results show that chemical structure and properties of mineral particles significantly effect on photochemical reactions of pyrene and secondary formation processes of Cl-Py. The results in the present study indicate that production amounts of halogenated PAHs in actual coastal environments are different according to composition of sediments.
