Antibiotic resistance is one of the critical health issues all around the world. Though abuse of antibiotics and low coverage of wastewater treatment are serious in Vietnam, the occurrence of antibiotic resistance in water environment has not been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in different water environments in Hanoi to evaluate pollution level of ARGs. Water samples were collected from 7 lakes, 2 rivers, 3 urban canals and one groundwater in Hanoi in February and March 2019. Real-time PCR was applied to quantify ARGs including bla_(TEM), sull, tetA & tetW, ere(A), qnrD which encode resistance to β-lactams, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, macrolides and quinolones, respectively. All ARGs were detected from almost all samples. Abundances of ARGs in rural groundwater and river water used for drinking water source were lower than those in the other locations. In particular, level of contamination was greater in the urban canals receiving untreated wastewater where relative ratios of sull to 16S rRNA genes were up to 15%. In conclusion, ARGs were widely prevalent in urban water environments in Hanoi.
