摘要

The Pockels effect is a nonlinear optical effect describing the change of a material's refractive index due to an applied electric field. The complex oxide barium titanate (BTO) has become the focus of intense research for electro-optical applications due to its extremely large Pockels coefficients. In this paper, we explore the possibility of creating a dynamic waveguide by utilizing the Pockels effect in BTO thin films to create refractive index contrast and guide light without the need for patterned strip waveguides. We present finite-element simulations of the electro-optical performance of an experimentally realizable BTO dynamic waveguide and use these simulations to provide optimal device design parameters to maximize the performance and efficiency of such a device.
