The flow uniformity of the pulverized coal injection (PCI) is critical to the stable operation of blast furnace. The manual observation is difficult to monitor the flow uniformity of PCI. This paper proposes the intelligent monitoring method based on video, which can accurately monitor the flow uniformity of PCI real-timely. The region of pulverized coal cloud in image is obtained by image processing and computer vision technology. In accordance with the analysis of obtained region characteristics, the region feature extraction algorithm with regard to two-dimensional area information is applied to estimate the mass flow of PCI. In addition, three kinds of volume estimation methods (the super-pixel grey weighted method, the equivalent ellipse method and the multiple linear regression model method) are explored to obtain the three-dimensional optimal information of pulverized coal cloud. Extensive videos captured from the steel factory are used to evaluate the monitoring method. The experiment results show that these methods can accurately monitor the flow uniformity of PCI, and the errors are within ±13.1%.
