Range Estimation of CE-OFDM for Radar-communication Integration

Radar-communication integration has been put forward to deal with shortages of radio frequency and space resources on small mobile platforms. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been a research hot spot for years due to its anti-multipath fading performance and designing feasibility of subcarriers. This paper takes constant envelope OFDM (CE-OFDM) signal for integration to cure primary draw-backs of high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR) in OFDM. However, the data transmission rate and range estimation have conflicting demands on the phase modulation index. To improve range estimation accuracy ensuring communication throughput, we propose a novel range estimation method of CE-OFDM based on complex modulation symbols instead of calculating correlation functions. Through numerical simulation analysis, the performance of this range estimation method of CE-OFDM is provided to be effective for radar-communication integration.
