Sand erosion due to gas-solid two-phase flow at high temperature and high velocity is an important issue in the lifetime of turbine vanes and blades in jet engines. In order to understand particulate erosion phenomena, a test apparatus was developed and sand erosion tests were conducted. The particle velocity was measured by particle image velocimetry and specimens' surface temperatures were obtained using infrared thermal imaging and a thermocouple. The eroded surface geometry was investigated using a laser profiler. This paper presents the results of tests employing high-velocity and high-temperature gas-solid two-phase flow impinging on a flat plate at several angles.
