Post-stall Flight Model Fidelity Effects on Full Stall Recovery Training

A quasi-transfer of training study was used to determine the effect of model fidelity on full stall recovery training. Three different full stall aerodynamic models of a T-tailed turboprop aircraft were developed. A baseline model was systematically varied to generate an exaggerated model and a mild model. A group of pilots were assigned to each model and then trained to proficiency. All pilots were then evaluated on the baseline model. Operationally, the differences in the recovery performance of the groups of pilots were insignificant. In addition, pilots were subjected to a surprise stall event following the training and evaluation tasks. All pilots successfully recovered, however 11 of the 15 pilots did not strictly follow the proper recovery procedure, suggesting surprise stall events are more difficult to recover from than a planned stall event.
