As the automation of machinery control systems on ships has grown and evolved over the past 3 to 4 decades, two distinct approaches have emerged: centralized control with distributed signal input/output units; and distributed control. This paper compares the affordability, survivability and maintainability of the two approaches with the goal of determining which is the better choice for new naval platforms.
