Strength degradation effect due to impact damages on the surface or the edge is a major concern for designing composite structures and improving material strength. However, knowledge about the impact on the edge is limited than when compared to that on the surface. In this study, edge impact tests and compressive strength tests after edge impact were carried out using CFRP. Furthermore, to investigate the effect of material characteristics on the CAEI strength, progressive failure analysis was conducted. According to test results and analysis results, interlaminar fracture toughness did not affect failure load. On the other hand, compressive in-plane fracture toughness in fiber direction showed larger effects on the CAEI strength than interlaminar fracture toughness. This seems that the in-plane failure, especially crack propagation, played major roll of the final failure.
