As recording densities increase into the 10 Gbit/in~(2) regime, there will be more demands made of the replay head technology. The understanding of head saturation is important because deviation in the pulse linearity can affect both PRML detection and positioning error when the sensor is used for servo. A related issue is how far the head can be pushed beyond its linear range before the saturation prevents it from being a usable device. This paper examines pulse distortion arising from head saturation for both DSMR [1] and spin-valve [2] playback heads.
