A planar monopole antenna with a modified annular ring patch exhibiting super wideband behaviour is presented. Its simple topology offers superior compactness with a size of 20 mm × 20 mm, and an impedance bandwidth ratio of more than 15:1 (6.5 GHz - 100 GHz). The simulated radiation patterns maintain consistency at lower frequencies whereas deviations are noticeable at higher frequencies due to the nature of the surface current distribution. The proposed antenna is linearly polarized with realized gain varying from 3 to 10 dBi over the operating frequencies. Furthermore, the time domain characterization of the proposed antenna is simulated and discussed. With a group delay variation less than 0.5 ns in face-to-face and face-to-side configurations, the proposed antenna is a potential candidate for portable devices employing super wideband communications.
