Swell-shrinking damage caused by expansive soil in China leads to about 15 billion dollars economic loss every year, and it will be valuable in engineering to improve the characteristic of the expansive soil. The expansive soil in the area of Lishui, Nanjing, is used as the example to study the improvement characteristic in this paper. First, the maximum dry density and the relationship between the optimum moisture content and lime content were analyzed by liquid-plastic limit test and standard compaction test. Then through the triaxial compression test, the relationship between the mechanical property of the improved expansive soil with the lime and fiber content were studied. The result turned out that the strength of the improved soil of 6% lime content was three folds of that of plain soil, while fiber had a better ductility improvement and less strength improvement. At last, it was observed by using unconfined compressive strength test that the improved expansive soil (6% lime content and 0.3% fiber content) is 5.7 folds than plain soil in strength.
