Tuned liquid dampers (TLD) are passive vibration absorbers of lightlydamped structures such as airport towers, chimneys, skyscrapers, longspanbridges, overhead power lines, tall buildings, masts and offshoreplatforms. TLDs dissipate the structural vibration energy with the helpof sloshing waves, hydraulic jumps, wave breaking and wave run-up inthe tank walls. In shallow water condition, the frequency and dampingof TLD are amplitude dependent; a “hardening- spring type” nonlinearbehavior of water sloshing is documented in many literatures. Thepresent study has accounted this hardening behavior in the numericalmodel. In this paper, the empirical relation, between the jumpfrequency ratio of TLD and the non-dimensional amplitude of externalexcitation, proposed by Yu et al (1999) is used.
