The purpose of this research was to examine apparel brands' perspectives on using recycled materials in products, designing products for recyclability, and offering take back programs. Interviews were conducted with nine companies. Only one company designs products that can be more easily recycled back into the original product and only two offers take back programs while all used recycled materials in some products. The motivating factors, as well as the challenges for engaging in these practices, were identified. The results of the study may help apparel and shoe, retailers and brands in developing strategic plans for designing for recyclability and take back programs, which ultimately will divert more clothing and shoes from landfills.
