Direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signal as a way of reliable covert communications is widely used for underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. The detection of noncooperative DSSS signals is the first step in UWA communication countermeasure system. In this paper, periodogram method, cepstrum method, and autocorrelation method are compared for detection of non-cooperative DSSS signals in UWA channels. The cepstrum method and the autocorrelation method are improved by overlapping sub-windowed approach and averaging method. The performance of detection probabilities, false alarm probabilities and ROC curves are compared among improved cepstrum method and improved autocorrelation method by simulations and sea trial results.
