In this paper, a concept is presented for simplifying and accelerating the development and testing process of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM), or its control unit, without utilizing any actual electric machine. The proposed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Emulator (PMSME) utilizes the Power-Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) concept to reproduce the mechanical and electrical characteristics of actual PMSM either serving as motor or generator. The machine model and vector control algorithm for current, both based on Park's transformation, are implemented in the back-to-back converter based machine emulator. The principles of the emulator and the design of its coupling network are discussed as well. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the emulator is able to resemble the actual machine closely both under motor and generator mode.
