Communication satellites systems, such as Inmarsat-4 and Iridium are potential candidates to be used as illuminators of opportunity (IoOs) for passive radar detection and remote sensing. These satellites provide global (Iridium) or near global coverage with exception of polar area (Inmarsat) and hence could be used on entire surface of the earth in contrast to a more commonly investigated passive radar based on terrestrial IoOs, such as DVB-T, DAB, FM etc. broadcasting transmitters. This paper presents analysis of the ambiguity functions of the communication satellite signals, based on analytical study and computer simulation. The potential range and Doppler resolutions of these waveforms are shown and the waveforms' applicability for targets detection and tracking are demonstrated.
