The Four Fates of the 140-Year-Old Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel

Four different fates of the B&P Tunnel were described herein and they include: 1. No Build. 2. Abandonment. 3. Adaptive Re-use. 4. Full Rehabilitation and Modernization. The concept designs presented for each fate considered construction aspects and concerns with regard to fire-life safety and other design related issues. The cost estimates and construction schedules developed will be a part of the criteria for determining the outcome of the four fates presented. To date a determination of which fate will be advanced has not been made, as the evaluation process is still in progress. Alternatives for the final fate of the existing B&P Tunnel will be further developed as additional team consultation occurs.
