XENON STABILITY ANALYSIS OF THE NUSCALE SMALL MODULAR REACTOR

NuScale Power LLC (NuScale) is developing a Small Modular Reactor (SMR), which is based on the conventional pressurized water reactor (PWR) technology. This work presents the results from the xenon (Xe) stability analysis that was performed for the NuScale reactor. SIMULATE5 was used to evaluate the Xe stability with respect to axial- and radial Xe oscillations; for different cycles, core depletion states and at various power levels. The analysis shows that the reactor is stable with respect to Xe oscillations. The Xe stability results are also in agreement with previous Xe stability work based on large PWRs [1]. That is, due to its small size, the NuScale SMR is more stable against Xe oscillations than its larger conventional PWR counterparts.
