ZPPR BENCHMARK EXERCISE USING APOLLO3~®

The accuracy of the APOLLO3~®, a general purpose neutron transport and diffusion code under development at CEA, is verified on the examples of ZPPR reactor configurations. The studied configurations are taken from a series of experiments conducted within the JUPITER cooperative program, with the data published under the International Reactor Physics Experiment Evaluation Project (IRPhEP). The objective for APOLLO3~®is to set up a suite of model problems that can be used to test the components of the code that cover the principal steps employed in reactor physics analysis, starting from selfshielding, through lattice calculations, cross section homogenization and computation of the three dimensional power distribution. This exercise uses ZPPR-10A configuration and is based on the conventional two step scheme with 1D/2D lattice and 3D reactor calculation, using the IDT discrete ordinates flux solver based on the linear short characteristics method. The selfshielding calculation is based on the subgroup method of APOLLO3~®, which is performed simultaneously with the multigroup flux calculation in order to properly account for emission from fission and scattering. The results are compared with those of TRIPOLI4~®Monte Carlo code and with the benchmark reference. The results for the control rod reactivity and the sodium voiding effect are given.
