Efficiency is not exclusively related to the electrical efficiency of power electronics, but can also be increased by weight reduction in the case of mobile systems. Due to the savings in weight and the related savings of fuel the overall system efficiency of an aircraft and the especially harmful ejection of exhaust gases at high altitude can be reduced. This allows direct economic savings and environmental damages are reduced. With this converter, fundamental insights into the operation of power converters with higher operating voltage, current and a frequency beyond 1 MHz can be achieved. These parameters will be challenging in terms of operational reliability as well as the EMI of the operating network in terms of conducted and radiated interference. The rapid progress in GaN and SiC power semiconductors will lead to a further miniaturization of power electronic assemblies and subsystems. Inductive components have a significant impact here. The drastically increased frequency requires improved ferrite materials with lowest losses and transformer designs with unique construction technologies. Within the governmental funded project "GaN-resonant" (FKZ: 16ES0075) a new DC-DC resonant converter should operate up to 3 kVA @ f 1 MHz. The paper describes an interim development status of this novel passive resonant transformer unit and the new improved ferrite material.
