The formation of high-spatial-frequency gratings by ultrashort laser pulses is revisited with respect to basic mechanisms. Transient nonlinear excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and the evolution of self-induced scattering centers in the very initial stage are analyzed. The role of specific nano-feedback processes is discussed. Femtosecond pump-probe diffraction experiments indicate a multistage process.
